70 million people suffer from bipolar. The worst part is most people don’t know they have it and that there’s more than one type.

Sara Schley went from varsity athlete, 4.0 GPA, accepted to one of the top medical schools, to suddenly not being able to add two plus two.

She describes it like an alien had abducted her brain. Being misdiagnosed and prescribed anti-depression drugs was like poison for her. Almost driven to suicide, she knew something needed to change.

Yoga, meditation, diets, affirmations, and therapy, wasn’t enough.

It took 25 years and 5 psychiatrists to learn that she had a brain pattern called “bipolar II, on the bipolar spectrum”.

Finally getting the right treatment she experienced a life transformational shift and within three months it was like a light switch flicked back on.

As an international business consultant, she has served over 50 enterprises and 1000s of individuals including leaders such as Eileen Fisher, Nike, MIT and Ben & Jerry’s.

In her groundbreaking book BrainStorm: From Broken to Blessed on the Bipolar Spectrum Sara tells her life-changing story to help end the bipolar stigma, bring new understanding, and save lives.

In this episode, Sara talks about the shame and stigma around mental health issues, how to recognize what it might look like if you or someone you love may be suffering from bipolar. She also shares about the difference between bipolar I and bipolar II, and how medication can actually help.

Also, Sara mentioned this website as a resource for learning more about mental health during the episode, and here is her website as well:
